Our Carbon Footprints (sierragorda.net)

A carbon footprint is a representation of the effect an individual or an organization has on the climate in terms of the total amount of greenhouse gases produced (measured in units of carbon dioxide).

Footprinting is now widely used around the globe as an indicator of environmental sustainability. It can be used to measure and manage the use of resources throughout the economy. It is also commonly used to explore the sustainability of individual lifestyles, goods and services, organizations, industry sectors, neighborhoods, cities, regions and nations.

Carbon Calculators

Sierra Gorda Carbon Offsets use a calculator called SafeClimate (© SafeClimate.net all rights reserved) developed by the World Resources Institute.

NOTE: World Resources Institute and the Global Footprint Network have allowed GESG to use their carbon and ecological footprint calculators, but in doing so are not necessarily endorsing Sierra Gorda Carbon and Environmental Offsets.

This calculates the carbon dioxide footprint for individuals based on the two areas of energy use that make up the majority of most individuals' carbon dioxide emissions which are home energy consumption and transportation by car and plane. It bases the calculations on data available at the website of the GHG protocol initiative.

SafeClimate for Business has also developed guidance and tools to assist companies and organizations in measuring GHG emissions. SafeClimate for Business is a joint project of the Sustainable Enterprise Program, World Resources Institute and Center for Environmental Leadership in Business (CELB), a division of Conservation International.

If you are interested in learning more about SafeClimate, please visit http://www.safeclimate.net.

For individuals who do not have the time or information necessary to calculate their carbon footprint, they can use standard offsets to offset some or all of their carbon footprint based on national estimates for carbon emissions.

                                                               i.      Homes & Lifestyle

We as individuals have an impact on the global environment everyday by building homes, driving our car to the store, to school, or work, keeping warm in winter and cool in summer, and deciding which foods to buy in the supermarket or which products to buy in stores. These actions inevitably lead to the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.  Sierra Gorda Offsets provide the opportunity for individuals to offset the impact of their everyday lives on global warming.  There is also a rapidly growing interest among foreign citizens in re-locating or retiring to Mexico and Sierra Gorda Offsets can provide the chance to take local action to offset the emissions we generate in our everyday lives.

How Your Personal Offset Works, in Three Easy Steps:

c.        Weddings and events

Green Weddings

Start your marriage off right with a wedding you can be proud to say is Carbon Neutral.  We´ll help you calculate the travel emissions of your guests, and include a standard offset to cover the emissions of your reception venue, and can even offset the hotel stay of your guests.

How Your Wedding Offset Works, in Three Easy Steps:

·         Contact us to help with your customized calculation at gesgiap@prodigy.net.mx or alina.lenth@gmail.com or in Jalpan de Serra, Qro., Mexico at 011 52 (441) 296-0242

·         Multiply the tons (1 ton = 2200 lbs. or 1000 kgs) of CO2 you would like to offset by $15 to calculate the cost of offsetting your event.

Contact us for our bank account details in order to make the transaction.

Carbon Neutral Weddings and Events

Many organizations hold annual conferences or meetings and choose to offset the emissions of these events as a way to demonstrate their commitment to sustainable business practices.  Airline travel is one of the most significant contributions we make to global greenhouse gases, and by organizing a carbon neutral event your participants will recognize and appreciate your strong pledge to fighting climate change.   Our staff can work with you to design an offset which will cover the transportation emissions of your conference participants, as well as energy use at the venue.

iii.  carbon neutral films

Here are a few snipets I found online about carbon neutral films, the first offset by Terrapass...

http://www.treehugger.com/files/2006/01/syriana_goes_cl.php

Syriana, the geopolitical oil flick from Participant Productions starring George Clooney, (for which he just won a Golden Globe -- congrats, George!) has announced that the film has gone "climate neutral." Accomplished by offsetting 100% of carbon dioxide emissions generated by its production, an estimated 2,040 tons have been offset through investments made in renewable energy. TH pal NativeEnergy helped the film's producers calculate all carbon dioxide emissions from all of Syriana's production activities, including filming, air travel, rental car and truck emissions, hotel energy use, diesel generators used on location, office and warehouse energy use, and emissions from shipping, and then purchased renewable energy credits from renewable energy projects to achieve neutrality.

http://www.treehugger.com/files/2005/01/jake_gyllenhaal.php

The Day After Tomorrow director Roland Emmerich tried to make the production carbon-neutral by paying Future Forests to plant trees that would offset the movie's CO2. Gyllenhaal himself had trees planted in Mozambique, spending around $10,000. The trouble is, Future Forests is a profit-making company, and it would be greener for stars to reduce their emissions rather than trying to offset them. On the other hand, using jets to get to filming locales is part of the territory for actors, so this could at least be a positive step.

For examples of  events we have offset:

Approximately 250 invited participants attended the Seventh Global Summit on Social Entrepreneurship organized by the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship.   All carbon emissions generated by the air travel of participants coming from 34 different countries to attend the event were offset through carbon sequestration carried out in reforestations of the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve.  Total offset: 102 tons CO2e.  Price: US $1530.

The TBLI Conference is the world's largest annual international education and networking event on ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) or extra-financial sustainable investment.   Last year's event in Paris was the largest event so far with over 500 participants.  Travel to this event was carbon neutral thanks to an offset with Sierra Gorda Carbon.  Total offset: 298 tons CO2e.  Price: US $4470

d.       Business

iii.  Offsets for Businesses and Organizations

Demonstrate your commitment to social and environmental responsibility   by offseting all or part of your businesses carbon dioxide emissions including travel, office space, vehicles, and events.

Our Project meets the highest standards with tangible benefits to climate, biodiversity, and local communities.

Offsets for Businesses and Organizations

More and more businesses and organizations are understanding the business case for sustainable development as consumers increasingly demand more environment friendly products, the financial community seeks greater assurances from companies in demonstrating their ability to manage environmental risks, and companies compete to attract and retain skilled workers who want to identity with corporate values.

Sierra Gorda Carbon Offsets are a unique option for improving your organization´s social and environmental responsibility because you have the opportunity to directly benefit the local stakeholders that provide the field experience, technical expertise, long-term monitoring, and personal commitment to ensure the success of your offset.  Our reforestations provide tangible benefits to global climate and regional biodiversity, and offer an alternative livelihood to highly marginalized rural community members.

e.       Travel

                                                               i.      Green Travel

Tourism is one of the world's largest industries and it's on the verge of tremendous growth.  It generates about 10% of total world GDP and employs over 10% of the global workforce, . Mexico has become a globally significant travel destination largely as a result of its geographic and biological diversity including desert landscapes, snow-capped volcanoes, ancient ruins, colonial towns, resorts, beaches and world class diversity of flora and fauna. However, travel especially by air is one of the fastest growing sources of CO2 emissions. Sierra Gorda offsets provide travelers the opportunity to offset the impact of their trips on global warming, contribute to the protection of Mexico's world class biological diversity and help to alleviate poverty linked to environmental degradation.
